Actor Ben Stiller announced his diagnosis with prostate cancer, based on a routine PSA test done in his 40’s. His cancer was intermediate-risk and he was successfully treated with surgery. He came forward about his diagnosis this week to raise awareness about the importance of PSA testing for early prostate cancer diagnosis at a curable stage. Our group has published on the importance of baseline PSA measurements during the 40’s to determine who is at risk for life-threatening prostate cancer (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16442597). This was very important in Ben Stiller’s case and is something that other men in their 40’s should discuss with their doctors.
